Sixteenth-century England was an era full of talented and not-so-talented, self-made individualists who left a greater or lesser mark on their age. Thomas Stukeley (c. 1525-1578) belongs among those who left a lesser mark and Juan E. Tazon's new book tells his story. Tazon begins his account with a survey of Stukeley's appearances in the literature of late Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Contemporary authors portrayed him as an ambitious and faithless adventurer who met his end in the doomed army of King Sebastian of Portugal at the battle of Alcazar in 1578.
