Edward II was an awful ruler. He had no political instinct, failing to cultivate relations with his nobles and squandering his political capital on favorites who abused their position. His military exploits were almost uniformly disastrous. To make matters worse, Edward's baronial opponents, most notably Thomas of Lancaster, were no more capable than he was. Politics degenerated into envy, spite, and petulance. Baronial efforts to control an incompetent king produced the Ordinances in 1311 and years of edgy bickering, feuds, and outright rebellion. Edward was finally overthrown by his Queen Isabella and her paramour, Roger de Mortimer, in 1326. They resolved the awkwardness...
