This collection of essays originated in a conference convened at Fordham University to revisit issues raised in a 1985 Fordham conference, which itself had led to the influential book by the same editors, Women and Power in the Middle Ages (1988). Both conference/book enterprises had ambitious goals: to articulate fresh perspectives on medieval women with the benefit of the preceding decade and a half of new research and theory.
