Mark Duffy's book is the first survey of the royal tombs of medieval England since J. Charles Wall's Tombs of the Kings of England (1891), a book which is surprisingly missing from his bibliography. Duffy's declared aim is the examination of "a wide group of senior monuments ... and to ask how they related to the deceased as individuals." The odd term "senior monuments" seems generally, but not always, to equate to "royal monuments." His definition of royal is, he writes, "a broad one; apart from kings and queens, it includes their siblings, children and their children's spouses" (p. 11). In effect, Duffy provides an overview of monuments of royalty and the royal family, roughly from the Conquest to Henry VII's death in 1509. This is a large project and the work...
