The millenary commemoration of King Alfred in 1901 marked the high point of the king's popularity as a national hero, but offered little in the way of scholarly reflection. The date itself had been two years late, owing to uncertainty over the precise date of Alfred's death. A "Meeting of Learned Societies" had been assembled as part of the proceedings, but played a largely symbolic role amid the pomp of political dignitaries.
