At a memorial commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder reminded his nation that the atrocities of the Final Solution cannot be explained away as an aberration of the demon Hitler. Hitler did not live in a vacuum. The German people supported him. If history is not to repeat itself, Schroder warned, future generations must be aware that there can be no Fuhrer without followers.
