Article Excerpt
I think you know what I'm saying. Basically, there's more than one kind of intelligence.

I first became aware of this at Glastonbury Festival in the 90s, when I found a stall selling 'smart drugs'. Perfectly legal, they said. Won't make you high, but will significantly improve your IQ. Fine, I thought, and paid three pounds for some blue liquid in a plastic cup. It had a fruity, metallic taste not unlike melted slush puppy. And did it work? Well, kind of.

The mere fact that I'd purchased a 'drug' got my heart beating and adrenaline pumping, so the increased mental alertness I experienced as I took my initial sips could be put down to the placebo effect. But by the time I'd sipped a third of the way down I was calm. Hang on, I thought, this is ridiculous. Three quid for a blue drink in a plastic cup to make me super-intelligent? What am I thinking of?! Even as I thought this, another thought arrived: Aha, it's beginning to work!...
