Burgess, CPA, president of Burgess, Crechale & Necaise, P.A., Jackson recalls that in the late 1980s, the Mississippi Society of CPAs put out a newsletter with an article that said they were changing their health insurance, and this could have a negative effect on CPAs whose wives were pregnant.
"A friend and I felt obligated to let the editor know that there were many CPAs who could be pregnant," Burgess said. "So I would say women have made great strides since then in being accepted in the business world. I think businesses in general have just had to learn how to be more family-friendly to keep women. And it is not just women. A lot of men want to spend time coaching soccer games and going to their kid's games. Men are more involved in parenting now than 40 years ago."
When choosing a CPA, it isn't just a matter of hiring someone who is good at crunching numbers. Trust is a very important issue.
"I think trust has to be earned, and you do have to prove yourself" Burgess said.
While some older, traditional males might be reluctant to trust a female CPA, them are a lot of businesswomen who would prefer working...
