CLEVELAND -- Indianola native Dayle Houston credits her college and post-graduate success to the Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation (MAMP) program at Delta State University (DSU).

A 2001 honor graduate with a 4.0 GPA who majored in chemistry, Houston is now a third-year pharmacology student in the doctorate program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where she is studying drug development for a G-protein coupled receptor responsible for platelet aggregation. Houston, who is also a Howard Hughes Fellow and plans to focus on teaching science and research-related topics at an HBCU (historically black college/university) when she graduates, will be petitioning for candidacy this spring.

"I participated in the MAMP program for my four years at DSU, and it was one of the best parts of my college experience," said Houston, who was recruited into the program in 1997.

Memphis native Tina Gambles, another MAMP enrollee at DSU, is a third-year student at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. After she completes veterinary school, she plans to pursue another degree of specialize in veterinary medicine.
