More than 80 percent of the construction and engineering firms with tollway contracts are donors to Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich's campaign fund.

Those companies have contributed a combined $1.3 million to the governor's campaign and hold tollway contracts worth $548 million.

Blagojevich campaign spokesman Pete Giangreco suggested many of the companies have donated to previous governors, who were Republican.

"There's a set of companies that have the expertise to get these projects and a lot of them give to both parties," Giangreco said.

If the trend continues, tollway contractors could prove to be an even more lucrative source of campaign money for Blagojevich as he prepares to run for re-election. The administration recently kicked off a 10-year, $5.3 billion,...
