Just two drops, administered three times, is enough to provide a lifetime of protection from polio, a disease many Americans consider ancient history but that still cripples thousands in other countries.

The vaccine costs just 10 cents, but in the six countries where polio still is endemic, lack of health infrastructure and distrust of the government mean that many children never get vaccinated.

Earlier this year, Scott and Wendy Davis of Arlington Heights traveled to India, one of those six countries, as part of Rotary International's worldwide effort to eradicate polio.

"To be allowed to be a small part of this effort is very exciting," Scott Davis said.

They stayed with an Indian family, visited hospitals, clinics and orphanages and administered the polio vaccine in three different...
