Nine-year-old Christian and 3-year-old Gracie Vasilev fought back in vain Wednesday night as their mother stabbed them over and over, more than 200 times each, in a struggle lasting less than an hour in their Hoffman Estates home, police and prosecutors said.

In a Rolling Meadows courtroom Friday, the only sign of that violence was Tonya Vasilev's heavily bandaged left hand and wrist, and a grim statement from a Cook County prosecutor detailing the two first-degree murder charges she is facing.

Cook County Judge Hy Riebman ordered Vasilev, 34, held without bond at Cook County jail. In Illinois, anyone charged with killing two or more people - or killing someone under age 12 - must be held without bond.

Scott Slonim, assistant public defender, met with Vasilev for about 10 minutes before the hearing.
