Seventeen years ago, Karen Krasne opened Extraordinary Desserts on Fifth Avenue near Balboa Park.

"It only sat 10 people," she said, "and it was pretty much financed with myself and my family."

Armed with $50,000 and no loans, she offered coffee, tea and her own specially created desserts.

"We were one of the first coffeehouses in San Diego," she recalled, "and one of the first to serve loose-leaf tea."

All before the dawning of Starbucks.

"We're happy they're here," said Krasne, 45, a Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef.

"It made people aware of what a cappuccino and a latte are. No one really knew what those drinks were. It was an education."

Her enterprise has since grown into a 165-seat operation, with a staff that has increased from an initial 32 to 80, with feature articles in national publications, including a cover...
