Irwin Mark Jacobs knows it well, and Paul Jacobs has significant insight into the matter. When April 20 came and went, the two gave market analysts and the media some idea about the condition of the family venture that father will soon hand on to son.

The venture, of course, is Qualcomm Inc., which the elder Jacobs founded in 1985. He cedes the chief executive's title to Paul Jacobs on July 1.

Irwin Jacobs isn't going far. He will remain chairman of the board. And in an April 20 conference call, he told analysts he would still be seeing them on the circuit.
