For Richard Stanczak of Bartlett, it is a way to perform the 1960s jazz and swing-inspired music he loves.

For Ken Szadowski, the Chicago Royal Airs Senior Exhibition Drum and Bugle Corps is a way to reconnect with childhood.

And for those who experience the 150-member group's patriotic music at parades and other suburban events this summer, their music can be a reminder of those who sacrificed to preserve our freedoms.

The drum corps, with an average age of 54, plays a variety of traditional and upbeat songs.

But the signature piece performed by the group, which draws members from all over the Chicago area, is known as "Taps for Truman" and honors their most famous member.
