World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq - freedom's fighters from our nation's wars will be out in force today for annual Memorial Day parades and celebrations.

But it's the personal memories and individual stories that make this day important to our local heroes.

"I think this is one of the greatest days there is," said Elroy Fitzgerald, a Korean War veteran. Fitzgerald, a Cary 'homer," born and raised here in town, served with the 453rd Engineer Construction Battalion attached to the 8th Army in Korea.

"I lost three good friends, from Cary, Fox River Grove and Crystal Lake over there. It's a sad time."

His fellow soldiers and those who died...
