At least once a week, a patient will walk into Dr. Laurence Levine's office in Chicago looking for a prescription for Viagra and walk out with a diagnosis of high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.

"Erectile dysfunction problems may precede structural or functional problems by at least five years or more," explained Levine, a urologist and professor of urology at Rush University's Medical Center. "The penis is the divining rod of vascular disease."

And if that divining rod doesn't lead a guy to the doctor, his wife will. Women, like it or not, often are the family health managers. They are the ones to encourage - OK, nag - their husbands to get checkups. They also are the family watchdog, encouraging good nutrition and healthy activities.
