While it's often true that good pitching stops good hitting, it's also true that good defense can win ballgames and errors - even one - can lead to a loss.

Just ask the North Eugene Highlanders, who allowed top-ranked Churchill one hit but lost 1-0 when Megan Peterson spoiled Ashley Likens' no-hitter with a one-out double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning of their Midwestern League softball battle Friday.

Meghan McCrone, who entered as a courtesy runner after Lily Rogers reached base on an error, scored to give the league leaders the victory and improve their record to 11-0 in league. North Eugene is second at 8-2.

"I've been in those situations before, but I was very nervous," said Peterson, who entered the game hitting .394 but grounded out and struck out in her first two at-bats. "I just tried to deal with the nerves - because nerves have gotten to me before - and just relax and hit.
