LCC editorial used loaded words

While explaining its endorsement for the Lane Community College Board Zone 1 seat, The Register-Guard included this about Rob Spooner's candidacy: "He has a long list of gripes ... and would scrap the college's women's studies program."

Loaded words have great power. Incumbent Paul Holman favors funding stability and flexibility and is described as having "vision." Rob discusses issues requiring tough choices, which are characterized as "gripes."

The Women's Program, which is not the same as Women's Studies, advocates for women's concerns and operates classes to help a few women transition back into the work force. While it also offers classes in Women's Studies, comparable classes exist in other disciplines. Women's Studies do not require a separate department.

Everything here is admirable, but students pay the price. Tuition has skyrocketed in recent years and is driving students away. Most LCC students are women, and it's likely that the net impact of the Women's Program is to reduce the number of women who attend LCC.

In recent years, enrollment at LCC has plunged. A thousand students should be attending credit classes but aren't. The editorial says the board doesn't need to be shaken up. If Eugene's public schools had experienced a 10 percentage point increase in the dropout rate, the news would not be taken so calmly.

However, on one point we agree. If the primary measure of a candidate is maintaining tranquility and "business as usual," Rob Spooner is not the guy.

That's why I support him.
