Maybe it's because "service" is education service district's middle name. That's as good a theory as any about why so many qualified candidates are interested in serving on the Lane ESD Board.

It's rare to encounter two races featuring a total of six active candidates - a seventh dropped out - in which such strong cases can be made for each contestant. They bring different skills and experience to the table, but there's not one who lacks the potential to make a meaningful contribution.

That said, two candidates' exceptional qualifications set them apart in the May 17 election: Tom Lininger in the at-large Position 6 race, and Tom Atkinson in the Position 2/Zone 3 (Springfield) contest.
