COTTAGE GROVE - Campaign signs along a freeway are usually associated with a congressional or even a presidential election - not a seat on the local fire district board.

So it's a measure of how heated things are in the South Lane County Fire & Rescue District that Interstate 5 is lined with several large wooden signs featuring a red fire hat above the slogan "Elect Carroll Hoiness."

The election - the second since the former Cottage Grove, Creswell and rural South Lane fire districts merged two years ago - probably will serve as a referendum on the actions of the first board - including its decision Monday night to dismiss Chief Dan Olsen.
