Leftover food is going to waste

I am writing to inform the community of a situation that needs remedying. I work as an executive chef in the food service field in Eugene. Up until about eight weeks ago, we carefully packaged and donated our leftover food to the Eugene Mission. It has always been a mutually beneficial situation: People who need the food get it, and we don't waste precious food.

About eight weeks ago, I was informed by the head of the Eugene Mission that the mission would no longer accept food donations from us because they couldn't be used to make soup.

I cannot donate the food to Food Rescue Express because that program has rules against food that has been placed on a buffet line. I have called Catholic Community Services three times and not received a call back. I have spoken to numerous local charities, and those I work with have also attempted to find a place for this food.

Perhaps we have finally wiped out hunger entirely in this city. If so, I thank God. If not, I would like to know why, when people are willing and able to donate perfectly good food, no one is interested.
