It's sort of like in real estate, where location is everything.

But in the world of natural foods, Mark Lew has concluded, it all boils down to locality.

His T-shirt - the unofficial uniform at Lew's new Capella Market - says it the most succinctly: "Locally grown, locally owned."

"That's where we felt Wild Oats kind of went astray on us," Lew says. "We have lettuce that was grown just up the road here, cut this morning. Not grown in California and shipped through a hub in Portland."

Lew, who was a store manager, defected along with several department managers just before Wild Oats closed the second of its two Eugene markets, at 2580 Willakenzie Road, early this year.
