In the last Springfield School Board election, the district was still recovering from the turmoil surrounding the forced resignation of longtime Superintendent Jamon Kent and was facing major budget shortfalls. Two years later, the Kent controversy has disappeared from the community's radar screen, and a new superintendent, Nancy Golden, is getting five-star reviews from all quarters. But financial problems continue to cast a long shadow.

Golden has done much to reinvigorate staff morale and has overseen completion of the Springfield Quality Education Model, a visionary blueprint for excellence that was crafted with extensive help from the community. But the district's budget woes threaten to undermine the model's goals, which include development of new strategies for educating struggling students, improving outreach to families from different cultures and the pilot "One-to-One Laptop Initiative" that aims to provide every student with a portable computer.
