The child's game of hide and seek must be universal across all cultures, and the mathematician's version of the search game holds a similar universal appeal. Two players compete: the hider wants to stay hidden for as long as possible while the searcher tries to find the hider as quickly as possible. What strategies should they use? The simplest formulation is as a two-person zero-sum game (with value given by the time the searcher takes to find the hider). The optimal strategies for the two players will depend on the region in which they can move, the starting positions, the speed of movement possible, and how close the searcher must be to the hider to find her. This book gives a masterful survey of search games.
