Lottery grants announced today will help communities across the UK to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe next week with a series of VE Day and other events.
Grants announced today bring to 1,047 the number of projects across the UK sharing GBP7million in funding for special projects including VE day re-enactments, aerial displays, street parties, exhibitions and storytelling events. These are just some of the many initiatives being funded through the Lottery's Home Front Recall multi-million pound lottery-funding scheme.
The GBP12.3 million Home Front Recall scheme, a joint initiative from Lottery good cause distributors the Big Lottery Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund, supports activities commemorating the part played by those on the home front during the war years six decades ago - former fire fighters, auxiliary services, nurses, Bevin Boys, dock workers, ex-service clubs and people in many other roles are organising activities.
Among the many innovative commemorative projects being held next few week are:
A 60th anniversary VE Day project hosted St Mary's Easebourne Parochial Church Council in Midhurst, Sussex, who have have been awarded GBP1,500 to hold activities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Second World War. The aim of the activities, on the weekend of 7 and 8 May, is to educate people about how the conflict affected the area...
