Somebody at Volvo has figured out that just because a car is built to the highest levels of safety, it doesn't have to have the personality of ajar of herring in cream sauce.

With that in mind, it's always a pleasant surprise to get behind the wheel of a new car and find out that there's more to it than you first expected, which is exactly what happened with the saucy new Volvo $40 sedan.

Introduced last year as a 2004.5 model, Volvo's new midsized sedan is advertised as offering "class-leading safety features with superfly style."

Coming from Volvo, the stodgy Swedish automaker, that statement borders on the risque. But it's not far from the truth.

While I'd stop short at describing the $40 as "superfly," it might actually qualify as "fly," because it serves...
