LAST YEAR was a good year for NS Reizigers. For the first time in three years passenger-km grew, increasing by 1.8% to 14.1 billion. Punctuality increased from 83.1% in 2003 to 86% last year. NS Reizigers says that punctuality has now returned to the 1999 level, which itself was the best result for 10 years.

NS Reizigers measures punctuality to within 3 minutes of schedule because even the longest intercity journeys scarcely exceed 3 hours or 250km. However, if the international norm of measuring punctuality within 5 minutes of schedule is used, NS Reizigers says punctuality would have been 92.6% last year.

Cancellations have fallen from 2.8% in the third quarter of 2001 to 1.2% in the same quarter of 2004. Guaranteed connections at interchange stations have increased from 89% in 2001 to 91% in 2004.

NS Reizigers has also improved its financial performance. An operating loss of 37 million [euro]...
