THE biggest challenge facing Mr Marc Descheemaeker, CEO of the operator, SNCB, is to clean up the finances to reach break even by 2008. SNCB currently loses about 200 million [euro] a year, but Descheemaeker has a good record as a clean-up man!

He worked for many years in retailing, launching new products and revamping stores before being given the task of improving the performance of a loss-making Belgian cleaning company that was part of the portfolio of the international Vendex group. He turned the company around and it was then sold to ISS, Denmark, the world's largest cleaning group, which has a number of operations in railways.

Descheemaeker was appointed to the board of the parent company and was subsequently approached by the then CEO of the old SNCB, Mr Karel Vinck, and asked if he would continue his activity by cleaning up SNCB's freight division. He had made a good start on that task by cutting a loss of 180 million [euro] in 2002 by a substantial amount by 2003 when the reorganisation came along and he was appointed CEO of the new SNCB with responsibility for freight and passenger operations plus...
