SPRINGFIELD - Since kids helped develop the libretto for a brand new opera premiering this week, you might expect the plot to lack the dramatic intensity that fuels the work of renowned composers.

But "Camp Friendship" - performed by Guy Lee Elementary School third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders - is rife with misunderstandings, fear, jealousy and last-minute emotional reversals. Better still, since kids had a hand in it, it's also great fun.

After all, how many adult singers could deliver on these immortal lyrics:

"You shut up!"

"No, you shut up!"

"No, you shut up!"
