Two local equestrians, Rachel Wood of Alvadore and Ellen Lowden of Eugene, were double winners in recent competitions. Wood, a Junction City High School senior, helped lead her school to a 13th-place finish among 58 Oregon and Washington teams in the Oregon High School Equestrian Teams' four-day state meet at Salem. Wood placed first in barrels and individual flags, and teammate Melissa Waterman placed third in pole bending. The only other Lane County gold medalist was Elmira's Heather Applebee with a win in the driving event. Lowden, 12, a sixth-grader at Spencer Butte Middle School, is three years away from high school equestrian eligibility, but is headed to the Morgan Horse World Championships at Oklahoma City in October following 11-and-younger age-group championships in hunt seat equitation and hunt seat pleasure at the Key Classic at Seattle. Lowden, who has been riding since age 5, has been competing for two years and will ride her 5-year-old Morgan gelding Gorgeous George at the Farwest Morgan Classic at Redmond in two weeks.
