Arts advocate Bette Shoemaker, the Oregon Country Fair and Funk/Levis & Associates are the winners of the Lane Arts Council's 2004 Arts Service Awards.

A high point of the Lane Arts Council's annual ArtsWeek (which runs today through June 6), the awards will be given at the arts council's annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Atrium Building in downtown Eugene. The event is free an open to the public.

Receiving the Alvord Award is Eugene School District Curriculum Coordinator Bette Shoemaker, who not only has more than 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator but consults throughout the nation in the area of integrated curriculum and use of technology to enhance learning.

Along with her curriculum coordination work and other duties within the school district, Shoemaker also organizes the Education Center art displays and has been an advocate for artist residencies and programs.

"Due in large measure to Ms. Shoemaker's efforts, a number of schools within the 4J district have received the funding necessary to provide two-week in-school artist residencies," arts council executive director Andrew Toney says. "Her work on behalf of arts education has touched thousands of lives throughout Lane County."
