Every bench tells a story. This is Bill's Bench. This is Bill's story.

Like all the best benches, Bill's shows itself unexpectedly - most often to bicyclists or runners who have slogged up a steep stretch of Fox Hollow Road south of Eugene.

Reach the crest of the hill, huffing and puffing, and there it is: A teak bench on a concrete pad, maybe five yards off the road, presenting a spectacular vista of trees and hills to the southwest.

Take a seat. You'll spy the rock at your feet with a plaque and inscription: BILL'S BENCH, followed by an explanation:

"Bill Sloat, a long-time Fox Hollow resident, loved this spot and dreamed of a bench here so cyclists and others could enjoy it too."

The plaque is dated 1991 and tells you that the bench is there on private property with the permission of the Dale Smith family. You'll notice a wire fence just a few feet away, and may be startled...
