Plywood makers had to wait a decade, but now they can say: "We've had an exceptional year."

Strong nationwide demand for homebuilding materials last spring spurred plywood prices, and those prices galloped through the seasons to a record high this April.

Workers at two dozen plywood or veneer plants in Oregon - including 10 in Lane County - are pulling in overtime to keep up with the demand. But the mills, bruised by years of financial turbulence, aren't adding many new positions.

Springfield-based plywood manufacturer Timber Products Co. is taking that approach at its mills in Grants Pass and White City. "It's not difficult to get them to capacity without having to add people," said spokesman Roger Rutan.

That makes for a hectic pace.

At Bald Knob Veneer in Creswell, the daily production is frenzied.
