With a state title within reach, Benson sprint coach John Mays took out a small cardboard box and gathered his troops just prior to the start of the 4x400-meter relay at Hayward Field on Saturday.

The Techmen trailed Beaverton by nine points - 44-35 - heading into the final event of the OSAA 4A boys track and field championships, and Benson's only chance to claim the crown was to win the relay.

It was time for special motivation.

Mays opened the box and showed each relay member what was inside - a bright, shiny state championship ring.

`We were nine points down going into the relay, and we were all excited,' Mays said. `So I got out my box and showed them the state championship ring. I had each one of them touch it, and then I asked them, `Do you want this?' '

The answer was a resounding yes.
