WASHINGTON, D.C. - Saturday's dedication of the World War II Memorial, beneath blue skies dotted with the equally bothersome flutter of helicopters and cicadas, was splendid - as ceremonies go.

Organized. Dignified. Solemn but hopeful. A fitting "last hurrah" to a generation that, as President George W. Bush told the crowd, "gave the best years of their lives to the greatest mission their country ever accepted."

But just as the war itself was fought and won far from the chambers of the elite, so was the most compelling story of this four-day commemoration found far beyond the stage, the billboard-sized LCDs and the tidy speeches of the

chosen few.

It was found in the forearms of baby boomer Gary Noteware of Boston, pushing the wheelchair of his 84-year-old father, Dayton, who once serviced planes for the U.S. Air Force.
