An Indianapolis funeral home business is taking a hardheaded approach to child safety.

Hardheaded, that is, in the sense of providing free bicycle safety helmets for city children. Over the last three years, Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers have distributed more than 17,000 helmets, many of which went to children too poor to buy their own.

"It's a terrific example of corporate leadership recognizing a problem and providing the necessary resources so that you can really get at it," said Karen Bruner Stroup, the director of community education and child advocacy at Riley Hospital for Children. Riley is a participant in Flanner and Buchanan's program.
