PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The local RUSSIAN ALUMINIUM (RUSAL) recently began site preparation works for its planned aluminum manufacturing capacity expansion project. In so doing, the company recently placed the first major equipment order for the upgrade of its Sayanogorsk smelter that is located some 80 kms southwest of Abakan, the capital city of the Russian Republic of Khakassia.

As things currently stand, work on the foundations for the new pothouse was expected to begin in May 2004. Although the cost to complete the project has not yet been revealed it is nevertheless known that construction plans under consideration call for increasing production output by 290,000 tons per year (t/y).

In so doing, RUSAL expects to commission its expansion by some time during the year 2006. In addition, the company is also planning to expand its billet production capacity by another 80,000 t/y up to 160,000 t/y.

RUSAL, which resulted from the merger of a number of the largest smelters and other aluminum producers located in the CIS, is considered with a total staff of 77,000 to be the second largest primary aluminum producer in the world.
