PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Demand for diesel engine cars has recently been on the upswing in the Indian market. As a result, Japan-based SUZUKI MOTOR CORP., the parent company of the local MARUTI UDYOG LTD. (MUL), recently entered into a Product License Agreement with FIAT AUTO and ADAM OPEL of Europe to obtain technology for the manufacture of a 1.3 liter, state-of-the-art, diesel engines based on the Common Rail Injection System.
Following the Agreement, MUL has now announced that it will build a new factory to manufacture diesel engines for cars. Construction plans call for building a facility with an installed production capacity to of 100,000 diesel engines per year. According to Jagdish Khattar, MUL Managing Director, the investment is in line with is company's strategy of providing suitable products for diverse segments of customers.
The new Greenfield complex, to be sited in Haryana, is expected to cost about $77,000,000 to complete. Operational start-up is scheduled for some time during the year 2006.
MARUTI is engaged in the manufacture of various passenger cars and utility vehicles for the domestic and export markets.
