Article Excerpt The nerds are truly getting their revenge and not just in the movies. Refer to computers wizards as nerds or geeks but whatever your business or occupation, you probably need the services of a computer/technical person. It's a field that's much in demand ... or is it? With news of outsourcing computer services to India, failing dot-com companies and decreasing enrollments in college computer programs, maybe the future isn't as rosy for computer majors as it once was.
Not so, says Dr. Louise Perkins, computer science professor at the Gulf Park Campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. "Our enrollment is on the uptake and improving," she says of the year and a half since she came to the campus. "The master's program has doubled here."
She thinks students go into computer fields because they want to solve problems and do something interesting.
"I'm not a geek," she said, "and students don't go into it because they're geeks. They're highly intelligent students looking for good careers. It's the nature of the business that makes us speak...
