Researchers think silicon carbide project could change world.

STARKVILLE -- Why should the average Mississippian care about the silicon carbide research at Mississippi State University (MSU)?

"Because it is the future," is the simple answer by Dr. Mike Mazzola, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at MSU, and one of the founders of SemiSouth Laboratories Inc., a company developing commercial applications for the silicon carbide intellectual properties being developed at MSU.

That future could include significant numbers of high paying jobs of the caliber of those at Nissan, jobs that won't be in danger of being exported for cheap labor in a foreign country.

Silicon carbide is a high-power, high-temperature, high-frequency robust semiconductor being developed for commercial and defense applications in radar, power conversion and space. SemiSouth is a leading developer and manufacturer of silicon carbide electronics and electronic material.

Mazzola said silicon carbide has potential to become a "disruptive technology." Just as silicon chips were an engineering technology breakthrough that disrupted earlier, less efficient technologies, so silicon carbide has the potential to displace current methods of manufacturing.
