Spanish Trail Books preserves character in downtown Biloxi.

BILOXI--Spanish Trail Books in Biloxi's Vieux Marche is reminiscent of bookstores in England, the ones that have been around for centuries, have character and that wonderful old book smell.

"You can't get that on the Internet," owner Mike Hutter says of the special smell of thousands of old books, prints, magazines and postcards in a setting sprinkled with antique furniture.

The building dates from 1894, downtown Biloxi's oldest building, and has the original pressed-tin ceiling. It also has a patterned ceramic the floor laid in 1926 when the building housed a drug store. Exposed brick on the back wall and a balcony encircling the large space give added character. Hutter points out that his building survived a devastating tire that burned many frame buildings in Biloxi.
