Emmy award-winning actress Mariette Hartley, today is taking on a new and very personal role to launch a national bipolar disorder awareness initiative aimed at helping people with the illness get the diagnosis and treatment they need to help them lead balanced, fulfilling lives. Bipolar disorder, a serious, chronic illness marked by disabling mood swings from high (manic) to low (depressed) states, is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States.(1) Recent data from one of the largest studies ever done of the prevalence and impact of the illness suggest bipolar disorder symptoms may affect three times as many people -- nearly eight million American adults (1 in 30) -- than previously believed.(2)
Despite its pervasiveness, many people are unaware they have bipolar disorder or how critical it is to be on a course of consistent, proper treatment. Misdiagnosis, underdiagnosis and delayed treatment of bipolar disorder are common, with patients going an average of 8 years without an accurate diagnosis.(3) Without adequate care, symptoms of bipolar disorder can be associated with increased rates of problems such as marital breakups, job loss, alcohol and drug use and even suicide.
By sharing her own journey to recovery, Hartley's goal is to offer hope and help to people affected by bipolar disorder and those who care for them.
