No religious exemption for Catholic Charities, says California court.

In a widely watched case on church-state separation, the California Supreme Court has ruled that Catholic Charities must provide contraceptive coverage to its employees, despite the Catholic Church's strenuous opposition to birth control. It is the first state supreme court ruling on this issue in states with contraceptive-coverage laws. (Catholic Charities of Sacramento, Inc. v. Super Ct. of Sacramento County, No. S099822, 2004 WL 370295 (Cal. Mar. 3, 2004).)
