Memory, bandwidth, and processing power- there is never enough of any but the first is getting something of a makeover. As the mobile industry struggles to strike a balance between what users want and what designers, service providers, and manufacturers want them to have, an all-around winner has emerged this past year: feature phones. Captivated by a range of multimedia features--video, Video On Demand (VOD), MP3 audio, and stills--an ever-widening group of users has made the feature phone their "don't leave home without it" companion, much to the delight of those of us who stand to benefit.

If the feature phone is to retain its favored-companion status, it must deliver high performance, otherwise, users will marvel at its capabilities, but only from afar. It must also appease users' hunger for multimedia applications by providing more memory with high data reliability. The more photos the phones take, the more memory they need. The higher the photo resolution, the more memory they need. The more options they use, such as photo editing, you guessed it: the more memory they need.

The proliferation of feature phones, in fact, has recently given rise to attempts to standardize hardware and software interfaces to speed deployment of new services to mobile users.
