It's hard not to see the Dramatic Competition lineup at Sundance '05 as a demonstration of independent film's continually narrowing imaginative horizons. Fully 10 of this year's 16 contenders were constructed around three indie staples or some combination thereof: family life, high school, and the drifting lives of young social misfits. (Three of the remaining six were about trying to break into show business--which speaks for itself really.) Regardless of an individual film's merits, such conservatism can and surely will lead to a steady supply of films every bit as formulaic as those of Jerry Bruckheimer or Garry Marshall. Perhaps it already has.
