Oregon runners Brett Holts and Eric Logsdon are Martin Smith guys. They were recruited by Smith, were personally coached by Smith, are loyal to Smith, and were shocked and deeply disappointed when Smith resigned, in a negotiated settlement with the university, less than two weeks ago, on the eve of the outdoor track and field season.
And yet the fifth-year seniors say that rather than simply looking back in anger, they want to help lead the Ducks forward this spring, toward the goals that had already been set:
To win the Pac-10 Conference title and to finish high in the NCAA championships.
They want to do that for themselves, for their team, and for Martin Smith.
Holts, the steeplechaser from Bend, and Logsdon, the distance runner from Canby, both addressed the entire Oregon team on Monday afternoon, in an athletes-only meeting that followed an hour-plus team meeting...
