Avoid meaningless stereotypes
Just curious: When writers to the Mailbag speak derisively of "the rich," to whom are they referring? To those born with the proverbial silver spoon in their mouths? A few lucky lottery winners? People who work hard all their lives to lay aside funds for retirement so they can avoid living off the government in later years? Only those in the higher income tax brackets? People who pay their bills on time, even if it means taking menial jobs to fill in the gaps when the coffers run low?
It is far too easy to place others in our own pet little compartments without realizing how unreasonable and prejudiced we ourselves have become. We make judgment calls concerning the poor, the cops, the homeless, government and victims, knowing little or nothing about the facts.
Lighten up, folks! Let's try to rejoice with those who succeed, weep with those who mourn, extend the benefit of the doubt along with a helping hand of comfort where we see a need. This is what it means to be rich and, in the process, we become better citizens instead of judges, whiners and complainers.
