Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices publications are published today, 31 March by the Department of Trade and Industry. Energy Trends covers statistics on energy production and consumption, in total and by fuel, and provides an analysis of the year on year changes.

The March edition of Energy Trends also includes articles on: "Carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption in the UK", "UKCS capital expenditure survey 2004", "DTI/UKOOA Exploration and appraisal drilling survey 2005", "An update on regional and local gas consumption statistics for 2003" and "An update on regional and local electricity consumption statistics for 2003".

Quarterly Energy Prices covers prices to domestic and industrial consumers, prices of oil products and comparisons of international fuel prices.

TOTAL ENERGY: 2004

* Total production in 2004 was 237.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent, 8.6 per cent lower than 2003.

When examining temperature corrected annualised rates:

* Total inland consumption on a primary fuel input basis was 238.0 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2004, 0.7 per cent higher than in 2003.

* Between 2003 and 2004 coal and other solid fuel consumption fell by 2.4 per cent.

* Oil consumption increased by 1.4 per cent.

* Gas consumption rose by 3.1 per cent.

* Primary electricity consumption decreased by 9.1 per cent.

COAL: 2004

* Provisional figures for 2004 as a whole show that coal production (including an estimate for slurry) was 11.2 per cent down on production in 2003 at 25.1 million tonnes. Deep mined production was down 19.8 per cent and opencast production was down 7.8 per cent.

* Imports of coal in 2004 as a whole were 13.4 per cent higher than in 2003 at a record high level of 36.1 million tonnes.
