Fertility levels in England and Wales have been below the level needed to replace the population for around 30 years. The population is, however, still experiencing natural increase (more births than deaths). Given the current level of fertility and improving mortality rates, the population will not see any natural reduction in the next 30 years, according to an analysis of replacement fertility published today by the Office for National Statistics.
The analysis, in the Spring issue of Population Trends*, finds that below replacement fertility is, eventually, likely to lead to a fall in population size in England and Wales. However, this fall will, most likely, be delayed long into the future by other factors such as improvements in mortality rates and inward migration.
The population of England and Wales is ageing. An immediate increase in fertility to replacement level would slow the pace of population ageing, however, ageing would not be halted.
